Spinal Stenosis Cincinnati

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the the spinal canal. The spinal canal is sort of like a tunnel in which the spinal cord is located. When the space gets smaller, it puts pressure on the spinal cord and the accociated nerves.

Causes of Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis mostly affects people who are elderly. Spinal stenosis can affect any part of the spine - the lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine. Spinal stenosis is most commonly caused by degenerative disc disease.

Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

Since spinal stenosis can occur in any part of the spine, but most commonly affects the neck and low back. Symptoms of spinal stenosis in the cervical region include neck pain, shoulder pain, arm pain or weakness. If the stenosis is severe enough, arm & leg weakness can occur. Spinal stenosis in the lumbar region can cause low back pain radiating into the legs. If severe, leg weakness can occur.

Diagnosis of Spinal Stenosis

Doctors will diagnose you with spinal stenosis after performing a few tests. They may start off by conducting an X-ray of your spine. While this is not capable of seeing soft tissue problems, it can see if there are issues with the vertebrae, such as a curvature of the spine, bone tumor or a defect of the bone. The best way to diagnose spinal stenosis is with an MRI. If a patient can not have an MRI, then a myelogram or CT may be performed.

Treatment of Spinal Stenosis

A doctor may recommend wearing a supportive back brace. This is supposed to work to align the vertebrae and take the pressure off the spinal cord. It will appear as a corset and works to support your posture and give your spine a rest and a chance to recover. They will also recommend you take some pain relievers to help with the inflammation of the spinal cord. If conservative measures fail, a trial of Epidural Steroids may be helpful. This procedure uses a small needle placed into the epidural space of the spinal canal followed by injection of a steroid solution.

Also physical therapy is recommended. You may be told to keep moving to improve the muscles in your back. This could improve your posture and take the pressure off the spinal cord. If the spinal stenosis is serious enough, the doctor may recommend considering surgery.
